The Emergency Management Institute is accepting applications for the next Disaster Resistant Jobs:  Strategies for Community Emergency and Economic Risk Management courses scheduled in Fiscal Year 2007.

Dates:   August 20-23, 2007

Course Information: The Emergency Management Institute, in conjunction with the Economic Development Administration, will conduct the Disaster Resistant Jobs:  Strategies for Community Emergency and Economic Risk Management in fiscal year (FY2007).  This course is designed to raise awareness within communities throughout the nation of the need to protect the economy from hazards.  Small and medium sized businesses provide nearly 80% of jobs in any given community and are also at the highest risk of failure when affected by a disaster.  Through mitigation and preparedness, the loss of business can be greatly reduced and insure the economic health of the community.

In this course, students learn techniques they can use to reach the small business owner and help them find simple solutions to reducing the effects of hazards.  Techniques range from data backup to mitigation from floods, wind and earthquakes as well as working with their employees who may be affected by the disaster.  Each student will make a presentation to the class as if they were addressing a service club gathering, meeting with local business people or a town council session.
