Course Description:

As Americans recover from the latest series of major flood disasters, design professionals and government officials are increasingly called upon to provide technical assistance to reduce or eliminate future flood damage. This recently updated 4-day course provides participants the opportunity to learn current engineering principles and practices for retrofitting flood-prone residential buildings.

Course Goal:

This course will cover the concepts of flood-proofing and retrofitting, regulatory framework, design parameters, benefit-cost analysis, and technical feasibility considerations. Participants will complete a design exercise on a real-life case study. The course will also include a computer laboratory session with hands-on exercises using the FEMA benefit-cost analysis program modules.

Course Length:

This course is 4 days in length. Travel days are Sunday and Friday.

Target Audience:

The course is intended for engineers, architects, and building code officials. Floodplain management, hazard mitigation, planning, zoning and public works officials with engineering, architectural, or building science knowledge may also apply.

Prerequisites:

None.

Continuing Education Units:

EMI awards 2.9 CEUs for completion of this course.
